How Local Does Health Insurance Need To Be?

When I started trying to choose a self-employed health insurance agency, I immediately discovered that I had more questions than answers. Some of the questions were able to be answered easily with a little bit of research. For example, I wasn’t sure if I needed an HMO or a PPO but some research into each easily helped me decide on a PPO. Other questions weren’t answered so easily.
For example, I never figured out for sure how close to my own location I should be searching when looking for good health insurance. For example, did I want to look generally at FL health insurance or did I need to look specifically at Ft Lauderdale health insurance or health insurance west palm beach? Or could I just look at the national level and not worry about the state where I lived at all?
In the end, I decided to select a national health insurance agency that had a local plan specific to my state of residence. This allowed me to choose from an array of local doctors but to be able to access adequate coverage in other states when I would travel for work or for pleasure. I’m not sure if this is what you’re supposed to do when choosing health insurance but it’s what worked for me.
