Experiences in Treating Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a horrific experience to witness. Not only does it destroy the body, it can ravage the mind, killing millions of brain cells, ruining a perfectly intelligent man or woman’s cognitive thought, and eventually blur the lines between chemical damage and existing neurological issues.
Having been in the midst of the drug addicted in a drug rehab center for a portion of my career, I can attest to the volume of severely addicted individuals who have been met with a dual diagnosis – attributing an equal part of their drug addiction to a mental disorder as to a series of poor choices.
Treating someone with a cocaine addiction who is also suffering from depression or bipolar disorder is harder than telling them to stop. It requires a careful, integrated approach to their addiction. You must provide the necessary support network to help them shuck the weight of their addiction while ensuring they have the emotional and physical support necessary to withstand the horrific experience that will follow.
For anyone who thinks that drug addiction is merely the culmination of too many poor choices in an individual’s lifetime, remember that not every addiction is so easily controlled. The addicted need our help, whether in getting past their dependency or in leading a normal life.
