Online Colleges vs. Traditional Colleges: What’s the Difference?

There is a lot of discussion these days about the differences between online colleges and traditional (i.e. campus) colleges.  Many educational purists believe that getting an online degree can’t possibly be as good — or as respectable — as getting a traditional degree.  But what really are the differences between online and on-campus classes?

  • An online college might not be accredited by the same accreditation agency as traditional universities.  For some people, this is a problem, because you can’t transfer credits from one college to another unless they use the same accreditation agency.  Some people (including some employers) might also look down on your degree as not meeting the standards that are set forth by the normally recognized accreditation agencies.
  • An online college might offer a truncated degree program.  Some online schools focus on shorter degree programs.  I suggest comparing any online program you are considering with a comparable degree from a traditional college.  While many students like the idea of earning their degree more quickly, it’s important to make sure you will still learn everything you need to know!
  • Online degrees sometimes cost much more than traditional degrees.  Going to a university in your state often makes you eligible for an in-state tuition rate, usually about a third of the out-of-state rates.  Online colleges don’t offer this discount, so be sure to shop around and compare prices between different schools to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

While many people frown on online education, I’m not so sure it’s always a bad thing.  However, I do think that just like everything else in life, you need to take a close look and consider all of your options before making a decision, to make dead sure that this is the best thing for you.
