What You Need to Know to Work in a Nursery

Working in a nursery might only be a part-time job for you, but there are still certain things you will need to know to do your job well. For instance, you will need to be able to answer questions about:
- How much sunlight certain plants need. For instance, if you know about phalaenopsis care, you’ll know that phalaenopsis orchids prefer indirect sunlight, whereas some other plants might do better in a spot that gets plenty of direct sunlight.
- How much water certain plants need. Some plants need to be watered every day, while others actually do better with less water. For instance, if you know about cattleya care, you’ll know that this strain of orchid can be easily overwatered.
- What nutrients and/or potting material different plants need. Most people will assume that any old dirt will do, but if you know anything about orchid care you know that this isn’t really the case at all. Knowing these things helps you to make sure you educate customers on how to properly care for their plants, preventing them from becoming unhappy if their plants fail to thrive.
Learning this stuff might be as simple as reading a couple of books or learning from your coworkers, or as time intensive as taking classes on the subject. In any case, you should make sure that you can – or are learning to — answer questions about plant care in order to keep your customers happy.
