Culinary Training, Automotive Training Replaces Job Experience in Importance

Education is almost a necessity to having a successful career these days.  This trend is most noticeable in industries that were previously taught via experience, mentoring, and apprenticeships.

Examples of careers where education has gained importance include:

  • Culinary careers – Where chefs used to get culinary training from their superiors, forcing them to earn their right to climb the ranks, nowadays a culinary arts degree can help you bypass a lot of the grunt work.  There are many culinary cooking schools that teach students not just how to cook, but also how to cook the finest of foods.
  • Automotive careers – Like the culinary industry, the automotive industry used to consider a love of working on cars, combined with years of experience working under master mechanics, to be qualification enough.  Now, there are many automotive schools that enable students to learn what they need to know via education rather than long years of job experience.
  • Art careers – Art used to be an industry that was open to anyone who could wield a paintbrush with any skill.  Even several hundred years ago, when art academies were springing up across Europe, artists in America could make a name for themselves without training formally.  Today, art education has turned into a big deal, and art students can learn about all of the important movements and techniques throughout the ages.

There are many more careers that are now almost inaccessible without an education, but these examples demonstrate the impact on different industries that this trend has had.

Almost three hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin became a book printer and publisher by working as an apprentice during his youth — a move that enabled him to become quite successful as an entrepreneur as an adult.  Likewise, famous painters such as John Singleton Copley were able to rise to virtual stardom without ever having any formal training whatsoever.  Unfortunately for today’s generations, however, education is now a necessity if you want to achieve any amount of success in your career.
